“Best of Switzerland” A Journey to Building Greening Highlights in Switzerland

Program

Meeting point at the University of Basel main building, registration office

Natural oasis at a lofty height – Green roof of Jacob Burckhardt House

High above the train tracks, a natural oasis with orchids and a great variety of plants opens up. We will show how biodiversity on roofs can be promoted with simple design means.

Everything in flow: Natural oasis and “Sponge City Roof” Green roof of St. Jakobshalle

With various furnishing options and seeds from the Reinacher Heide, a near-natural riverbank landscape was created on the roof of St. Jakobshalle – a paradise for insects and birds, on a roof! The “Sponge City Roof” is connected to an adjacent roof for drainage and also optimizes water storage.

Unmistakable, striking, yet delicately built and greened – Futuro Liestal

The design idea for the building greening on the Futuro building developed from an interpretation of the surrounding cultural landscape with principles of Concrete Art. The cultural landscape of Northwestern Switzerland and especially the Basel Jura is a small-scale mosaic of different agricultural and horticultural uses and plant cultures. The areas immediately adjacent to the Futuro site also correspond to this pattern. Therefore, this expression is adapted for the design, especially of the roof. A large-scale ground-based facade greening encloses the strikingly delicate building.

Lunchbreak

Telli Shopping Center, Aarau

A diverse riverbank landscape with transitions to meadow habitats was created on the Telli Shopping Center to promote biodiversity.

Aglaya Garden Tower, Rotkreuz

Rising from a base used as office space, the 70-meter-high residential tower “Aglaya” stands above the new Suurstoffi quarter near Rotkreuz station. The high-rise is a pioneering project with a long-range impact and the first residential tower north of the Alps that is greened over the entire facade and roof. It joins illustrious examples of new “Hanging Gardens,” such as the “Bosco Verticale” in Milan or the “Parkroyal” building in Singapore. The continuous greening was the main idea of the building owners, who realized a sustainable quarter with its own energy supply, designed green spaces, and high living quality on the Suurstoffi site.

Herb Roof Garden, Grafenort

Fantastically integrated into the cultural landscape, the roof garden of the Bissig family presents itself in the expansive valley floor. An impressive combination of a production site for tea and herbal products was realized on a new wooden building, where the roof greening functions as a utility garden and processing and parts of the marketing can be carried out in the building.

Overnight stay, hotel will be organized

Mittwoch, 4. Juni

Lake Waterworks Moos, Zurich/Wollishofen

Leader: Rafael Schneider, Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZHAW, Urban Ecology Research Group
A unique “Wonder of Building Ecology.” Built in 1914 as one of the first reinforced concrete buildings in Switzerland. The greened roof area has been sealed for 100 years (1.5 cm cast asphalt sealing) and is now considered a nature reserve thanks to the orchid diversity, which is unparalleled in the Zurich area. The roof of the listed building complex shows how the flora from the early 20th century could be preserved on the roofs.

MFO Park, Zurich Oerlikon

A masterpiece and an icon of urban greening!

The MFO Park consists of two parts: a park section and a large square. A large, greened hall spans the park section, creating a unique, multifunctional space of high quality. The hall corresponds to the large-scale volumes of the surrounding buildings. The double-walled galvanized steel structure with climbing aids made of stainless steel cables is enveloped by various lushly growing and fragrant climbing plants.

Earth Houses by Peter Vetsch

The earth houses built into hills and slopes prove how wonderfully architecture can harmonize with the surroundings. The energy-efficient marvels are in harmony with nature and are among the most unconventional underground projects in the world. In Dietikon, we can view one of Peter Vetsch’s most famous complexes up close.

A model roof for agriculture – Greening and air conditioning of the laying hen house Asphof, Rothenfluh

A model roof for agricultural buildings was realized on the Asphof (Rothenfluh), which regulates the temperature inside the “organic” laying hen house (free-range housing of the chickens) and visually integrates the facility into the surroundings. The 1000m2 were designed with landscape-typical material, according to the procedure of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Applied Sciences Wädenswil. The natural landscape design on the extensive laying hen house develops into a dry meadow over time, allowing optimal integration of the roof area into the surroundings.

And it smells good!

Facade greening “Wisteria Alley” Feldbergstrasse An “icon” of the ecological enhancement of street spaces, over 60 wisterias have been greening, cooling, and enriching Feldbergstrasse for 30 years. What should be considered for successful facade greening, and how can we best enhance entire streets with climbing plants?

A green roof and grasshopper paradise and a superlative facade greening at the Stücki Park shopping center

Many rare grasshopper species have settled on the largest green roof in the city area, and even the praying mantis has been spotted. We show the ecological diversity of the roof and how green roofs can ideally be combined with PV modules. Additionally, a 300 m long facade greening as a diverse plant wall.
